Top Attractions in Peru

Me and the most magnificent wonder I have ever seen, the Machu Picchu

First visit: October 2012
My Country #26

Visiting Peru had long been on top of my travel list since I've always wanted to see Machu Picchu which for me is the most magnificent creation in this world. Finally in 2012, I was fortunate enough to travel with the Singelresor group and discover what this country has to offer. Here are some of the attractions we visited and which I would recommend to my fellow travelers.

Machu Picchu: Travelling to Peru is not complete without travelling to Cusco and gazing at this wonder. The word Machupicchu means "old mountain" but Bingham referred to the site as "the Lost City of the Inkas".

Inca Trail: For the adventurous, taking the Inca Trail is definitely one of the best ways to reach your final destination which is the Machu Picchu.

Q'inqu: This is an archeologial site in the Sacred Valley of Peru. It was believed that in this place, sacrifice and mummification took place.

 Visiting the Ollantaytambo Village

Qalla Q'asa (The Citadel)

Terraces of Pumatallis in Ollantaytambo

Water Temple, Tambo Machay

Saqsaywaman Archeological Park

Cusco Cathedral (Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin) is considered as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cusco. The church is located in the Plaza de Armas.

Iglesia dela Compania de Jesus: Also located in the Plaza de Armas, this is the rival church of the Cathedral.

Enjoying the beautiful scenery when travelling from Puno to Cusco: The buses usually make stops for some picture taking. You can also buy some souvenirs if you want.

La Raya Pass: This is the highest point between Cusco and Puno

Museo Litico Pukara

Lake Titicaca: Located between Bolivia and Peru, this is one of the most fascinating lakes in the world and considered as the world's highest navigable body of water.

Visiting the Uros people in Lake Titicaca: The Uros people live on islands made of living reeds floating around Lake Titicaca. As our guide explained, it is very interesting that their DNAs are special making them withstand the cold weather.

Living with a local family: This was one of the highlights of our trip since we were able to somehow live like a local even for just a day. To Rosanna, her husband and their son, "Muchas Gracias" for having us 🙇

Colca Canyon: A canyon in Southern Peru famous for its condors.

Mirador de los Andes: This was probably the highest I had been in Peru at 4,910 meters above sea level!

Altiplano: It means "high plain" and it is where the Andes are at their widest. Here you can see lots and lots of alpacas.

Yanahuara's Church of St. John the Baptist

 Yanahuara's Main Square

Arequipa Cathedral: A very beautiful church complementing the main square.

Main Square of Arequipa: This is considered as the second most beautiful plaza of Latin America.

Cathedral of Lima: Located in the Plaza Mayor, this church was built in 1535 and after many reconstructions, still retains its colonial facade.

Municipal Palace of Lima: Located in front of the Plaza Mayor, this serves as the headquartes for the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima.

Watching a procession: If you happen to be in town when they have this long procession to celebrate the feast of a Saint or the like, this is surely not to be missed. The dresses, the music and the people are worth watching 👍👍👍

Justice Department Building: The building's architecture will definitely remind you of the ones in Europe.

Love Park or El Parque del Amor: A monumental statue of two lovers kissing located in the Miraflores district of Lima.

Parque de la Reserva: Definitely a must visit in Lima with all the spectacular fountain and light shows I have never seen elsewhere in the world.
